What do you think this blog should be called?

As you can see, I’ve just ‘revamped’ my blog. You like? :-)

I’ve never really put much thought into what name I should give to this blog. At first, I called it “Songwriting, Music & Inspiration”. I called it this because I’m about much more than just songwriting. (ie. vocal coaching and music production too).

For me, songwriting includes all of these area’s and so I just lumped the word “inspiration” into the mix.

However, I feel a change is in order. Tell me something, is it me or does “Songwriting, Musicianship & Inspiration” sound a little boring? Maybe it’s me. I may eat my words, I don’t’ know.

But right now, I need your input. I really do. I’ve had a bit of a ‘mind block’ when trying to ‘re-title’ this blog.

So what do you think this blog should be called? All of your suggestions are welcome.

You see the nice picture above this post? Well, there’s a blue blank spot there left intentionally. This spot will be filled with the new blog title that I’m gonna choose.

So, all suggestions are welcome. Just one thing, I don’t like the word ‘muse’ so stay away from that one. ;-)

Post ALL your idea’s and suggestions in the comments section below.

Massive thanks…

Shamir

PS. Any thing you want to ask me to help you come up with a better blog name, go ahead. I’m all ears and I’ll be posting below too.

Great layout! Hey maybe you could call it…erm

    I’m gonna think sorry mate!
    xx

  2. Kenny Aden Says:

Well, my thoughts are that it should be ‘Inspiration, Songwriting, and Music’. Because usually you need inspiration then you go on to songwriting and finally you can start to create the music that goes along with it.

Love the layout, by the way.

  3. tim martin Says:

I’m not sure what to say, but Thank-you for the opportunity. Something that has to do with your name Shamir.

  4. tim martin Says:

    Yes, perhaps “the Sha Blog”

  5. Mallory Says:

First of all, let me say THANK YOU for everything you’ve done on this blog and through your songwriting tips course (which I purchased awhile ago). You’re an angel for doing all this.

As for the title…I’m not very good at this…but I liked the phrase you used in your first paragraph - “More Than Just Songwriting” or More Than Just ____something____. Just a phrase that jumped out at me when reading your entry :)

  9. Ray Withrow Says:

Why not call it what it ’suggests’? = “Step up to the mic!!!” Sounds real corn ball, I know, BUT here’s WHY: the microphone is something we ALL need, & rely on!! Musician, singer/songwriter. sound engineer! In some way, we ALL are dependant on what sound comes out, & what is heard thru the mic! SO, why not?! This will open up discussions, tips, forums, announcements, news flashes, etc…..! Isn’t that what the ‘open mic’ represents? Well, to me, it does! Just a suggestion! Ray Withrow, Pres. of No Creek Music (ASCAP)

  10. Noah Allen Says:

I think this it should be called, “Songwriting, Music for the Mind and Soul”

    Thanks for asking, Noah

  11. Rich Says:

“A Song Is Born” - maybe a little cheesy but seems on track to me

or “Your Song Is Born”, “Let Your Music Sing”

anyway, something active rather than passively descriptive.

  12. Washington Says:

    Inspiration music.

  13. Glenn Says:

Hi Shamir, after reading the “What do you think this blog should be called?” you stated:

“At first, I called it “Songwriting, Music & Inspiration”. I called it this because I’m about much more than just songwriting. (ie. vocal coaching and music production too).”.

I thought about your own words, and my input for the new BLOG name is:

    “MORE THAN JUST A SONG”

  14. Sara Isis Says:

  18. Gemma Says:

Shamir.. the name you’ve got is ok. Yes it might need a bit of a change, but this is how people remember you. You need a name that will catch peoples eye and make them want to read it. E.g “Inspiration && Preperation For Songwriting And Lots More”. I think that sounds good, and it tells the readers that you are here to help if they have any problems with songwriting and that you are here for other things e.g vocal coaching and music production as you said. If you feel like you need any more help with your name just e-mail me and i’ll see if i can help you out. E-mail me the final outcome aswel if i don’t hear from you. Gemma

  19. Trevor Says:

Well, I was originally making myself a blog a while ago and I still have it, and I called it dreams of faith, because it’s all about any kinda of art and just perusing your dreams and doing what you love. Hmmm? Some name’s you could call it is Inspiration Equals creation, or something around those lines. See, the difference with the name is, is that people will be more likely to read your blog with your original name, but I think something based on art,. Inspiration, and being creative would be a nice place to start. You could call it productive inspiration? LOL, I don’t know, it’s up to you. I hope you liked my ideas though.
    Best regards,

I think that you are right and that the old blog name was boring! Although the idea I have probably isnt much better. Anyway maybe you could name your blog, “The Guide Into The Music World”. Anymore tips please send some.

    “infinite musical structuring method”

Sounds a little long if you ask me?

or maybe this would also do:

    “gathering notes for perfection”

Anyway, you said you needed help so eh…I tryed.

  31. jose miguel Says:

that title is good… just too long.
so everything together i think it could be like “musician’s breath”

but have to centralize in the google searchs… something that the people look for when they need lessons or advices.

    Hi Shamir

first let me say that this is a great blog, and i think anything name that has to do with music will do the job. because everything on here has to do with music. But I’m going to have to agreed with Sara Isis, her idea of calling it the “The Art Of Making Music” is great. but you don’t have to take my words for it. Well good luck anyways, I’m sure whatever name you came up with or decide to choose will be great.

Thanks for all your songwriting expertice Shamir. While all of the titles above are good, I seem to lean toward the person that suggested using your name. It is after all just a title for your blog page so I don’t think it needs to be too fancy or indepth. Maybe “the Sham Jam” or Sham-o-gram or something simple but catchy. You can always use the original as a subtitle or something.

  85. Allen Drige Says:

    Shamir,
I think it’s awesome you take the time to help all these people and their song writing questions. I had some struggle thinking of a blog name, but i eventually came up with some…

    1) song writing: perspiration of the soul

This is good because it says that everyone can do it and that it comes easliy. It also will make people lauph.

    2) Don’t Be Silenced

This one is significant because to me, the reason for writing is so you’ll be remembered and looked highly on. This name brings these thoughts to life.

  86. kay Says:

ummm…..well, since you a songwriter n’ your blog is about songwriting n’ the main thing a person has to have to right a well written song is some kind of inspiration n’ songs are built upon poems, so i think you should call it “Poets inspiration” n’ ovcourse you should put ur name “Shamir” to detail the blog.

p.s i’ve been writing ever since i was 11 yrs old n’ now i’m 15 n’ my friends think i should publish my poetryn i dont know where i can possibly do that. i’ve also been creating a poetry book with alot of my best work n’ i was planning on publishing that when i’m finished, but i don’t know what to do before publishing, so im asking for advice.

  98. Douglas Bamlett Says:

Ok the only thing more boring than the old blog is the replies to your latest topic. I don’t know if I’ll do any better but I can’t do any worse.

If you want to improve your message then you need a hook. There are ways to develop a hook and one of them is to look qualitatively at the topic. If I read your initial comments right you are looking for ideas about how to develop a hook. Something that says a lot with very little.

If you want to connect with your audience you need something that they can identify with. You need something that says a lot with a little, that does not trigger inaccurate preconceived notions, something that stimulates curiosity, and hopefully penetrates the psycho/emotional barriers they have erected to keep out the mundane, thus enabling people to interact on a more creative level.

First and foremost songwriting is a craft. One of my closest friends who can walk into any office in Nashville without an appointment and speak to whomever he chooses — speaks of the “craft” as if it were a supernatural gift and a divine calling.

Thoughts like “songcraft” come to mind. SoundCraft did ok on a global scale with its made up word “soundcraft”. [It doesn't hurt to make up words if they are self explanatory -- especially for marketing]. Another thought that comes to mind is another made up word like “songsmanship” though it has less punch that songcraft.

Just did a search on Songcraft and it looks like someone already has songcraft.com — so I guess that’s not as crafty as I’d hoped. Though you don’t have to have that URL to use the term.

“Musical Storytelling” has an interesting topical idea behind it. “The Story of Song” has a sort of esoteric sound to it along with a double entendre.

“Songs are Everything” has a thought it that causes people to think about that idea — you could follow it with a caption like “everything about songwriting”. Obviously you don’t have to actually cover absolutely everything in order to be true to the ideal of a whole approach to song writing.

“Beyond the Song” has potential at least as an idea to wring a hook from.

“Songs that work” contains an implication that points to whatever elements you want to bring to the table. “Songs that Work” appeals to the ideal inside a songwriter, it has a double entendre, with a depth of meaning between the two meanings. Frankly I’m tempted not to post this idea for two reasons: 1. The URL is available and you may not read this before someone rips it off. 2. From a marketing point of view whether you use it or not — it is a winner of a URL.

Ok here is what I did. I did not want to risk losing that URL whether you wanted it or not so I registered it. However you (and only you) can have it for the 10.00 it cost me to register it or a break on one of your products… provided you use it for your blog and don’t just resell it.

Even it you change the title to “crafting songs that work” or some other adaptation … as long as you are using the “songs that work” phrase then the URL is perfect.

Sorry if I seem presumptuous because you may not even like the idea … but I like it and will use it if you don’t so there’s no loss here. The only reason I left the entire post up is so that others could see the mini brainstorming session in progress. What I wrote here is just one of my thought processes I go through when crafting a hook. Hopefully someone will benefit from that. If not no harm no foul.

Wow here is another one …. just for fun… “hooked on Songwriting”. Yes I grabbed that url just now as well. The creative process is great.

Hopefully you’ll get some inspiration from this if you don’t like the ideas. I know I sure like the two URL’s I got out of this. If you don’t want them I can put them to good use.

    Douglas.

  115. Thairl Says:

I feel that writing music is something that lets us express how we feel about things. A good song brings up emotions in our listeners, often the same feelings we had as we wrote the song if they have had similar experiences. This is a Creative process and is also an Art. To use the term “Inspiration or Inspirational” evokes feeling of gospel music to me. I think something like “Creative Musical Artistry” would effectively capture the spirit of what you are doing here. I hope this helps.

  116. Drew Says:

    Lets make music

  117. Stephen Matatics Says:

Go with something creative yet direct to the point (of the pencil ;)? Great new layout by the way) like maybe:

    or

    SongBlog Jotter: Honing His Craft

But only cooler sounding or looking of course :p. I’ll leave it up to you but I think you should work off of that idea.

  131. Shamir Says:

Wow. What a response. :) Wayne, this blog has all the posts from the previous one. You’re just currently reading ‘one page’.

Here’s the main blog front page: http://songwritingtipsonline.com/blog/

OK, there are many cool names here. Douglas, you’re spot on with your analogy with what the name should entail. A note to everyone though, PLEASE do NOT register ANY domain names for me. It’s not what I’m after ;-) I do appreciate your time though Douglas.

I like the title to be short, concise, to the point, catchy, all that it encompasses and nice to ‘hear’.

Here’s a few that really grabbed me:

    - Musicology… (this came from Leo and Michael Anderson)

    - Songwriting & Beyond…(this came from Waleed Muhammad)

    - Songspiration (initially came from Ernie Nearman- very cool title!)

    - More Than A Songwriter… (this came from Mallory, Gemma and more)

    - MusiCraft - ( I made this up :-) )

    - Music & The Madness (Another one I just came up - right this minute)

What do you guys think of any of the above? I like the last one! It’s kinda’ cool and rings true.

    :-)

  134. Claire Says:

How about the The Claire blog JOKE, maybe the Shar Blog easy and cool .

  135. Douglas Bamlett Says:

Hey no sweat about the URL’s. I just couldn’t help but snap them up if I was going to send the post.

I actually don’t think you should change your URL anyways but it never hurts to have some great URL’s that redirect to your blog or a spot on your site. Even if it’s just a free ebook offer that has reference links to your main site in it.

As for a blog title I like songspiration the best — if I’m going to choose from the ones you noted above.

However I don’t think you’re there yet if you don’t like “songs that work”.

There is huge scope if you don’t use the word song in the title. If the goal of your blog is to reach people and connect with them you’ve got to get a bit more personal. I mean isn’t that the whole idea of maximizing a social networking tool like a blog?

You use the term madness and you only appeal to a narrow audience because of the “madness” concept. Songspiration has some potential but it lacks any personal connection except with a somewhat narrow field.

Musicology is a better name for an ebook or a course than a blog because the “ology” implies a learning system or at least a body of knowledge.

“Songwriting and beyond” is ok but lacks punch. There is not much of a hook there if any.

“Passion for Songwriting” evokes a more personal concept in that it implies involvement in the process and not just a label to identify a lifeless whatever.

    “Awesome Songwriting”
    “Awesome Musical Expression”

Get out a thesaurus and put some words together and keep playing until you find something that you can’t help but use.

Whatever you do don’t stop until you are thrilled with it. Don’t settle for something that doesn’t inspire you.

And don’t make the amateurish mistake of using words like “inspiration”, “creative”, and so on. If you want to evoke that in people then show creativity in your title in such a way that it stimulates those thinks in them.

Above all get a bit more personal. That is what makes a song great is it’s capacity to get inside of us and be part of us. Probably you like the last title the best because it is a bit more personal than the others — though perhaps a bit narrow as far as the audience who’d identify in a more personal way with that.

    Douglas.

Hey, that’s not bad…”Creative Juices”. However, my first thought was:
Shamir’s (Musical) “Tips ‘N Tricks”. Or how about, Shamir’s “Golden Voices”? …maybe… “Thy Golden Voice”….(by Shamir, naturally.)

I think to attract new readers it would be a good idea to keep the same name of ‘Songwriting, Music and Inspiration’, but perhaps tweak it a little, so for instance:
    ‘Thoughts on songwriting inspiration’
or ‘Thoughts to inspire your music and songwriting’
So that perhaps it sounds appealing.
Sorry that I couldn’t be of more help!
Good luck with the blog, I find it is always useful and enjoyable to read, I just need to start putting the ideas into practise!

Maybe an alternative might be Help for Songwriters. It needs to say what it is. Keep it simple.

If you try to be too clever with the title you may miss people looking for your kind of site.

Yes I like your new blog. Any blog with a P.A system of that size, and that microphone, I would say you are looking very good. As for the name, I think you have the right words for the most part. But, before I give you my title input, here is a bit of advice. What ever title you chose, make sure it has “songwriting” in it. That is a key word for new songwriters who uses search engines like Google, Ask, etc; it will take them right to your blog/website. That’s how I found you! Now for my title input: Shamir’s Songwriting,Music & Inspirational tips. Or, as Junior Hedrington says,he love the word inspiration, you could put it in front ie;Inspiration,of Songwriting & Musical tips.

    Music ~ Make It Happen

  208. Chapman Jones Says:

    “Simple Is Not Simply Done”.

I use that as my mantra. Years ago I thought “how hard could it be to write a song”. I think a title for your blog should reflect that simple idea. As you and everyone else here posting knows and understands, writing a three minute song with perhaps two and a half minutes of story time for lyrics is one of the toughest jobs there is. It is not for the feint of heart. And it is not “simply done”.

First of all, I really appreciate your approach for suggestions, because we never know it all. I am sure songwriting goes with music and vice-versa.

Why this? Well, we want to get the advantage of the search engines and search function. If I were a typical newbie to songwriting (which we all were once), I will type in ’songwriting’ and ‘free’ side-by-side. The subtitle is like another backup for other people to find this site. ‘Community’, ‘guides’,'tips’ are three common words to find a particular website dedicated to a subject.

  224. T Johnson Says:

I think that Songwriting , Musicianship and Inspiration is a fine title. I do, however think that your editor should be more careful with the improper punctuation. I see repeated misused apostrophes. For example:
“songwriting includes all these other [area's]” and:
    “Post all your [idea's]”
Neither of these words require an apostrophe. Simply being plural does not require this apostrophe. It should read [all these other areas] and [Post all your ideas]. I have seen this alot and it makes for difficult reading. The apostrophe is used when you are showing ownership, such as:
I am going over to Shamir’s blog to get some Ideas.
    Look at this songwriter’s work!

    Keep up the good work!

Shamir, I read your blog comments and always find something in them that talks to me. Leave it as is, also with the new layout ( which is OK, but doesn’t add anything to the content, I actually liked the purity of the old view very much).

Or. as old Will put it:

I can understand your misgivings about the word muse. I have similar ones with the word blog. It sounds like a chant to the porcealain idol after a misty dawn celabration.

  253. ron Says:

    Shamir,

Can’t come up with a definitive answer, but to be sure, some thoughts and ideas come to mind:
Music is the language of the heart, the primal expression and an uttered cry from the depths of the creator’s inner most being.

Essential keys: Primer for the expression of the universal language
Your tips are keys, and music has keys, as well. Your passion for music, a key factor of your person, is in fact the primary way you ’show up’ in the experience of life.

What a task! To capture the essence of what your passion speaks to us in this cyber neighborhood? This child must be named by its parent. The rest of us can only hint, suggest, inspire, point—all the same things you’ve done for each and all of us already.

You are a unique individual and this blog of yours is truly a fiat of who you are, a product of the construction of all the linked moments of your life. Your love of music, your desire to forge a pathway, to encapsulate and put into words something so abstract, that it nearly defies definition, and can only be known by its descriptions, and the force suggested by its sheer empirical power.

So in all that is a rhetoric to express, signify, verbalize the logo, the icon of you, shamir, our musical mentor in the realm of songwriting.

    Good Luck!

  263. Claude Richard Says:

    Hi Shamir,

I thought you might like “Intuitive Songwriting” or “Intuitive Songwriter”.
I know all my songwriting springs forth from somewhere in my unconscious mind.
It is only afterwards that I use rational thinking to polish-up the lyrics, find the right chords and so on. I imagine it must be the same for most songwriters.

By the way, I like “Songwriting, Musicianship & Inspiration”. Like you, I’m just not certain if it works as a title. You could still use it as a very good subtitle though.

Good luck with your search, Claude

  265. Mark DeFazio Says:

Trying to come up with something extraordinary when it comes to blog titles might be too difficult for me since I only write the music and not the lyrics in my songwriting team, but I would prefer something like ‘Shamir’s Thoughts”. It isn’t very interesting, but it gets to the point and since your site deals with songwriting and musicianship, we already know what the subject is and it might be redundant to use that as your title.

  266. Anthony Says:

    Hi Shamir,

Thank you so much for all your tips you sent to me, and the opportunity for me to make my suggestion. The new blog site looks great, Wow!

All of the titles above are good, but I seem to lean on a phrase carrying your name for easy identification of the designer. It is just a title for your blog page so I don’t think it needs to be too fancy. it should be something simple but catchy.
I suggest you use: “Welcome to Shamirs’ world of Music”
    Thanks
    By Francis Nujimem.

  271. JIM Says:

As a musician I think you should play for the song, not for your self.

  276. CHRIS Says:

    “Life Through Music”

  277. Adam Oliveira Says:

The question is would you like to keep it straight foward and simple, or more creative, and out there. Something straight forward can be “Mastering The Art of Songwriting” or “Songwriting tips” etc.
but if you wanted to be more creative and out there, which i personally prefer, you could use something like “Resonation of the soul” or “sounds of emotion” etc. or you can even combine them.
thanks for all the tips, look forward to hearing from you.
    Cheers.
    Adam Oliveira

  278. Stephen Smith Says:

  288. Heather Bowen Says:

How about something like ‘Shamir’s inspirational music and creative song-writing’

  289. Andrew Says:

    Hi Shamir,

I’m going to remind you with what you and Nadir preached in your song writing recordings. Come up with the subject of the song and the hook (not necessarily in that order) and name your song after the hook. The subject of this blog is about song writing, somtimes we digress into areas of music production, vocal coaching and others but it’s mainly about songwriting. So call it Songwriting. That’s it.

You and Nadir said that when a listener hears you song, if they only remeber one thing it should be the hook and if the song’s name is the same as the hook they will remember the name of the song. Think of some one web surfing and they stumble across your blog. They’ll know its about songwriting because its called songwriting and when their best mate who’s also a song writer says I’m having trouble writing songs, they’ll say “Hey I saw a blog about song writing. You should check it out”. Sounds simple right?

    Call it song writing.

    Hope this helps

  295. Annemarie May Says:

Thanks for sharing your dilemma with us, Shamir. The layout’s pretty cool and the title you suggest is sincere and honest enough ie tells people what you do. Trouble is, for the TYPE of music you’re all about ie contemporary music, it sounds a little too “heavy” and “serious”. Oh, I know that what you do is pretty professional and serious, even though it’s not “classical” music, but describing it in such a serious WAY might put some modern musos, composers, singers etc off. Remember that some of the “music community” may be VERY talented, but some may lack a great deal of education and literacy skills. It’s just the way some creative people are. What I think you need is some “cool”, catchy short title that suggests to people the idea of “tuning in on-line” to useful tips Shamir has to offer re what they aspire to do ie ie produce music in one way or another. And then, have a kind of “subtitle” that gives an IDEA of the MAIN things you do. It should be in plain, simple, snappy, cool language.

  296. Shamir Says:

Thanks for ALL your suggestions guys…. you’d be glad to know that I’ve finally chosen a name.
