Sonya Kitchell has been singing almost all her life. Before she reached her teens, she was leading her own jazz band in clubs, and later, she was singing and strumming her guitar on
tour opening for veteran entertainers. So friends thought Kitchell would have been a formidable contender on what has become the nation’s ultimate entertainment stage,
the phenomenally successful “American Idol.”
The teenage singer-guitarist-songwriter’s response? “No, thank you, not really interested.”
That’s because Kitchell has no interest in performing songs that aren’t her
own. Though she’s just 17, Kitchell has written more than 100 songs.
